Know your phototype

As summer approaches, we always fall back on it: sun and more sun, we all need it. We know the importance of the golden rays on our bodies, elixir for mood and bones, but beware of sunburn! Experts have been repeating this for years but the tendency is not to listen to the needs of the skin because the beach or the swimming pool capture us without making us think too much about how to protect it properly.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a basic protection factor of at least 15, calibrating the choice according to the characteristics of the skin: if it is fair, a higher protection factor of 30 to 50 is required. 
How to adjust? The phototype is the classification of the skin according to the amount of melanin and the reaction to UV rays: the lower the phototype, the greater the skin's sensitivity to the sun and the greater the risk of sunburn. ‘If you have a phototype III or IV, with skin that tans easily and tends to sunburn infrequently, an SPF 30 may offer adequate protection, especially for moderate exposure at the beach or during a walk in the sun. If, on the other hand, your skin is fair, sensitive or you belong to phototypes I and II, with a greater susceptibility to erythema and sunburn, an SPF 50 is the ideal choice to protect your skin even in the most extreme situations, such as a day at high altitude or long walks in the sun. 
It is not only the face that needs attention: the shoulders, décolleté and legs are among the areas most exposed and vulnerable to sun damage.
