From mathematics to fine essences

In February, during Milan Fashion Week, the famous French nose Yann Vasnier presented one of his latest creations to the press: Réservation. This is the name of the new perfume "inspired by Italian fashion, French know-how and the spirit of California", created together with the designer Francesco Ragazzi, a young entrepreneur aiming to ride the wave of luxury essences. It was during Fashion Week that we caught up with Vasnier, who revealed that he had been fascinated by the glamorous and luxurious world of fashion since he was a boy, and perfume has always inspired his dreams. "During high school, I considered several paths, including becoming a chemist or an art restorer or an architect but I would have been too similar to my brother who is a landscape architect", he confides to us in an exclusive interview.
Dr Vasier tell us more about your past and tell us about the prestigious diploma at Versailles.
I chose to dedicate myself to perfumery because it seemed to me the most original and unique way. I studied advanced mathematics before enrolling at ISIPCA (Institut supérieur international du parfum, de la cosmétique et de l'aromatique alimentaire) an institute of higher education in cosmetics founded in 1970 and located in Versailles on the campus of the University of Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines. Subsequently, I was selected by Françoise Caron, Jacques Vaillant and Yves de Chiris to work at Quest International (a famous international brand later acquired by the Geneva-based fragrance and perfume manufacturer Givaudan NDR).
How do you make a fine essence?
Originality, technical performance, high quality ingredients, a certain harmony and an element of surprise.
There is a lot of competition in your field and many skilled professionals with flair and uniqueness. How do you stand out?
By creating, working with new ideas, imagining novel combinations, building and cultivating relationships. This is precisely the process that leads to winning a project. The key is also not to focus too much on the end goal and let everything come naturally.
Where did you get the inspiration for Réservation?
I particularly enjoyed working on this project because it seemed very engaging from the very beginning. From the first moments it was clear that the fragrances would have the power to evoke intense and meaningful memories. Every note and every olfactory combination seemed to awaken deep emotions as if they could tell hidden stories. In particular, they brought back memories of my stays in California, where I had unforgettable experiences, but also fragments of other adventures around the world.
Did you collaborate well with designer Francesco Regazzi?
From the very beginning there was harmony. Francesco had a clear vision of what he wanted but also of what he did not like. There was his personal passion behind the project, a commitment that could be felt at every stage of the work. It created an ideal environment for sharing ideas and for a genuine experiential exchange that was crucial to the success of the project. We worked together with the desire to create fragrances capable of conveying the emotions we wanted to communicate.
What does "Art de Vivre" mean to you?
The joy of discovery in all its forms: cultural, gastronomic or any other kind of discovery. It is about knowing how to appreciate the finer things in life, living each moment with awareness and embracing the experiences that enrich our understanding of beauty, refinement, elegance and that unmistakable French touch. "Art de Vivre" is not just a lifestyle but a philosophy that invites us to celebrate life with gusto, to seek pleasure in the big and small things, to be able to grasp the authenticity in every detail.
What do today's high-end customers demand?
Today's high-end fragrance customers demand three main things: originality because they want fragrances that are not just new but have the ability to tell a unique story. Technical performance. Finally, a clear and decisive olfactory signature that stands out: so that each fragrance possesses a strong personality, capable of immediate recognition, and at the same time, is special and different from all the others.
What are your passions apart from perfumes?
I walk a lot, swim, get lost in gardens, parks, flowers, read, especially essays and biographies, visit galleries and museums and travel. I am particularly fascinated by Asia: Japan, China, Korea and Cambodia for the many changes of scenery it offers, the rich culture, history, culinary tradition, breathtaking landscapes and its arts...
